近日，發展中國家科學院（TWAS）公布新增院士名單，共增選出47位發展中國家科學院院士。本次增選院士來自全球24個國家和地區，其中6位來自中國內地高校和機構。中國科學院院士、歐洲科學院院士、北師港浸大（UIC）校長湯濤教授當選，是2023年我國數學領域唯一當選人。

發展中國家科學院成立于1983年11月，是非政府、非政治和非營利性的國際科學組織；致力于支持和促進發展中國家的科學研究，鼓勵對發展中國家存在的問題進行研究，推動發展中國家基礎科學和應用科學的發展。發展中國家科學院院士一般從發展中國家的著名科學家中選舉產生，外籍院士從發達國家的著名科學家中選舉產生。截至目前，全球共有發展中國家科學院院士約1400人，分布在數學、物理學、化學、天文學、地學、生物學、農學、醫學、工程科學、社會和經濟學領域。

湯濤教授簡介

湯濤，計算數學家，教育部長江學者講座教授，中國科學院院士，歐洲科學院院士，發展中國家科學院院士。湯濤教授主要從事計算數學研究，在雙曲型方程計算方法誤差分析，微分方程譜方法理論，相場模型的高精度算法，以及計算流體力學等領域的研究工作具有廣泛影響。2018年受邀在國際數學家大會作45分鐘邀請報告。他擔任多個國際數學期刊主編或編委，榮獲馮康科學計算獎、教育部自然科學獎、國家自然科學獎等多項獎勵。

UIC President Prof Tang Tao elected TWAS Fellow

The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) recently elected 47 new Fellows, hailing from 24 countries and regions worldwide, six of whom are from the Chinese mainland institutions. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and UIC President Prof Tang Tao was the only Chinese person in the field of Mathematical Sciences elected in 2023.

TWAS supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy. It is based in Trieste, Italy, founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world.

Today, TWAS has about 1,400 elected fellows in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, agronomy, medicine, engineering sciences, social and economics. They are some of the world's most accomplished scientists and engineers, representing more than 100 countries; 12 of them are Nobel laureates. About 84 per cent come from developing nations, and the rest are scientists from the developed world whose work has had a significant impact.

Prof Tang Tao is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and Fellow of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM). Widely known for his expertise in computational mathematics, in particular high-order methods and adaptive grid methods, Professor Tang was awarded the Leslie Fox Prize in Numerical Analysis, the Feng Kang Prize for Scientific Computing, First Prize in Natural Science by Ministry of Education, and Second Prize in the National Natural Science Award. He gave an invited lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018.

Professor Tang has long been served in Canada and Hong Kong in a variety of key roles. From 2015 to 2019, he was appointed as the Vice-president and Provost at the Southern University of Science and Technology. At present, he is the President of Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC).
